What “vegan suede” means on a real spec sheet
Suppliers use three words for surfaces that look almost identical in photos, and buyers lose weeks to the confusion. On our own spec sheets the wording is literal: Suede + Rubbe means a microfiber suede face on rubber, PU + Rubber means a polyurethane face on rubber, and Frosted PU + Rubber means the same polyurethane face given a matte, sanded texture. All three are vegan. None of them is leather, and none of them needs an animal-origin declaration in your customs paperwork.
What differs is the fibre structure. Microfiber suede is a napped textile, so it has thousands of tiny fibre ends standing up from the surface. Polyurethane is a cast film, so its surface is closed unless it is deliberately frosted. That one structural difference explains almost every performance gap in the table below, and it is the detail your factory should be able to explain without hesitation. If a supplier cannot tell you which of the three you are being quoted, you do not yet have a quotation — you have a price.

Read the table as a trade, not a ranking. Suede buys you artwork freedom and wet grip and charges you dry grip. Frosted PU buys you dry grip and charges you colour range. Conditional verdicts: which top layer is yours
If you are building a hot-yoga or sweat-heavy line, specify the suede microfiber top. It is the only surface here that gets better as the room gets wetter, and it lets you create photographic or watercolour designs that a cast film cannot hold as cleanly. Pair it with a towel-free care message, because that is the whole reason your customer is paying the premium.
If you are selling into alignment-focused studios or teacher training, the frosted PU build is the safer stock item. The matte face gives dry grip from the first minute of practice, and laser-printed body-position lines survive the abrasion of daily class use far better than any surface graphic.
If you want one hero mat that carries a full-colour brand pattern and still reads as a serious practice tool, order the printed PU + rubber build. It is the middle path: real colour, real alignment lines, and a surface that most retail customers already recognise.
If you are chasing the lowest possible landed cost for a giveaway or an event, do not choose any of these three. A suede or PU face is a second material and a lamination step, and paying for it only to print a one-off event logo wastes the whole advantage. Take a single-colour rubber mat with a laser-engraved mark instead, and put the saved budget into delivery timing.

Most sampling rounds are lost on omissions rather than disagreements, so write the details down before the first quotation. Six lines cover almost everything a factory needs to help you: top layer wording (suede, PU or frosted PU), base thickness, finished size, artwork file and colour references, alignment-line method, and packaging. Care instructions decide your return rate
Vegan suede is the one surface here that customers routinely mistreat, and every mistreated mat becomes a complaint about grip. Microfiber wants a damp wipe and full air drying before it is rolled; soaking it or leaving it rolled while wet flattens the nap that produces the grip in the first place. PU faces are the opposite — they tolerate a wetter wipe but hate abrasive cleaners, which haze the film permanently.
Write these two paragraphs onto the care card during packaging development, not after the first shipment. A wide product range only stays profitable if each surface arrives with its own instructions; one generic card across all your products is how a good mat earns a bad review.

Small first runs are normal and worth requesting in writing at the quotation stage, together with the sample lead time. Ask what changes between the sample batch and the bulk run — if the answer is nothing but volume, your trial is a genuine test.
Does a suede top make the mat slippery when it is dry?
At the start of practice, yes, noticeably more than a frosted face. Teachers usually mist the surface or accept a warm-up period. If that trade sounds wrong for your customers, the frosted build is the better stock item.
